Favourite Christmas Songs

Favourite Christmas Songs

Hey guys and gals! As you all seemed to like my post about the worst Christmas songs, here’s another list about Christmas songs!

Hopefully you’ll actually enjoy some of these, as they’re actually my 10 favourite Christmas songs! Anyone that knows me will probably know that I love Christmas songs, the cheesier the better, so you’ll probably have heard most of these before. Enjoy!

Fairy Tale Of New York – The Pogues

The brilliance of this song is that it’s not sickeningly happy, and it’s not incredibly sentimental; but it has elements of both to make it seem emotionally ‘real’. It’s clearly a winning formula as despite being released in 1987, it’s returned to the Top 20 every December since 2005!

Don’t Let The Bells End – The Darkness

Other than that it’s catchy, has awesome harmonised guitar; and is similar to other great songs by The Darkness, I couldn’t really tell you why I like this song. It’s kinda sleazy and  far too cheesy; but when I was 11 years old, the idea of a Rock Christmas song blew my mind, and I loved it!

Step Into Christmas – Elton John

So I did some research to uncover some Christmas Gems for this list, needless to say all I uncovered were more of the usual songs. Elton’s Christmas song was nowhere to be found however, and I’m not sure why. To me this is synonymous with Christmas; it’s catchy, fun and you can really dance to it. It’s easy to cover on Guitar, and great fun to play too!

Christmas Wrapping – The Waitresses

Quite possibly the most fun Christmas song ever! I’ve no idea what most of the words are, but that saxophone line is so happy! The bass line in the most unnecessarily intricate parts of a Christmas song; but it’s brilliant. The whole song is so upbeat, and the melodies are catchy; but yeah, the lyrics are pretty terrible…

Happy Xmas (War Is Over) – John Lennon

This song is just excellent and it’s probably the only Christmas song with an anti-war message. It really draws you in to the meaning of the song, but manages to somehow keep it slightly upbeat.

Do They Know It’s Christmas? – Band Aid (20)

This was written to raise awareness at Christmas time, and it’s done ok at that over the years. Mostly I like this song because it’s fun; listening to it now gives a glimpse into the era; the artists involved are the most popular at the time. The revamp does a similar thing, and makes good use of the modern artists; ok so Dizzee Rascal’s rap is kinda awful, and I’d rather Chris Martin wasn’t in it but; The Darkness featuring on it, with the awesome guitar lines is brilliant. Very fun.

Merry Christmas Everyone – Shakin’ Stevens

This is just a fun, cheer filled Christmas song. Quite cheesy, but most are. Reminds me of Christmas as kid, and immediately makes me think of Christmas again!

I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday – Wizard

This follows a similar theme from the previous song, it’s just a good fun holiday song!

Wonderful Christmas – Paul McCartney

For some reason I never used to really like this song. Paul’s written a couple of great Christmas songs; and the video for this isn’t nearly as excellent as his ‘Pipes Of Peace’; but it’s a lot more upbeat, Christmassy and fun.

Let It Snow – Frank Sinatra

This is definitely one of the most quotable, memorable and musically fantastic Christmas songs. It manages to barely talk about Christmas directly, which prevents it from being too cheesy. On top of everything great about this song, it features in my favourite Christmas movie: Die Hard!

So there it is, Merry Christmas! That completes my top 10 favourite Christmas songs! Nothing much new in this one, just some fantastic classics that make me love Christmas.

As a final note, unfortunately people don’t count songs as Christmas song unless they’re Christmas themed. However, think that being a Christmas number one entitles the song to being a Christmas song, and therefore I though I’d round off the list with this brilliant 2 time Christmas Number 1.
