The Boston Shakers: Shakin’ Up The Music Scene

The Boston Shakers: Shakin’ Up The Music Scene

It’s rare that the heavy beats and gnarly riffs of rock are paired with the well written lyrics and attitude driven vocals of rap, but when they are, it can be incredible! Liverpool based The Boston Shakers are the latest band to attempt this mashup of iconic genres, and their early demo tracks, Best Things In Life For Free and Black Magic, show a lot of promise. While mash-ups of Rock and Rap have been attempted in the past, The Boston Shakers merge the two to create an incredibly cohesive and organic sound.

Heavily rooted in Rock, the band’s overall sound is where they make the heaviest impact. The up-tempo drum beats drive the band forward while the fuzzy guitar tone and immense bass presence give the tracks a lo-fi production to create a punk attitude. Energy is infused into The Boston Shakers like junipers in gin, and this drive is mesmeric to listen to. The lyrics are also set in rock, mentioning the stereotypical; Drugs, fast cars, and hot girls. This, however, is where the similarities with Rock end, and the Rap features shine through. The lyrics, while thematically about stereotypically Rock subjects, they are well-constructed with wit and innovative thinking to create clever rhymes and funny lines. The quick delivery adds to the band’s attitude driven sound, yet Kam‘s change of pace and flow in these two energetic tracks shows that he’s capable of much more.

Beyond this, the band have a tremendous depth of sound, ensuring they’re more than just a band with a gimmick. The textures are well controlled, and varied to keep the tracks entertaining. The band’s self-titled track The Boston Shakers plays off the strong Irish American contingent in Boston, utilising both musical and lyrical devices to set the scene, and the track would even be suitable for The Departed!

These tracks are incredibly refreshing and exciting to listen to, and The Boston Shakers surely have a bright future if they continue to produce such terrific and entertaining tracks. One for the future, definitely worth checking out!
